Micro Weddings
Micro weddings are quickly gaining popularity. Part of that is the because of the global pandemic and restrictions on the size of gatherings. However, it is also a popular option for people that want the wedding without the party. Whether they are called elopements, courthouse weddings, city hall weddings, or micro weddings, I have loved shooting them for years. Take a look at some of the micro weddings I have photographed over the years and see if any of them inspire you. Also, feel free to call or email because I have lots of ideas for places and small event spaces!
I met Hao and Bonan on a cold February day at the Municipal Court of Seattle. We walked around City Hall and the Seattle Public Library before we went back to the courthouse for the wedding ceremony. The ceremony was indoors in the Judicial Library. Then, we went upstairs for a few portraits on the very cold rooftop deck.
Ruobin & Jeffrey had their micro wedding at the Seattle Municipal Court. It was a a rather cool and slightly rainy day. We visited a rooftop parking garage, the red wall at Seattle City Hall, and a couple courtyards. Also, we had a rooftop wedding in the rain!
I met Ivy and Adam at the Seattle waterfront for some wedding portraits. They are a very fun couple that made it easy to create beautiful portraits.
I love couples that enjoy each other’s company. Sarra and Sahil laugh together a lot. That made them fun to photograph! We walked around South Lake Union Park and the surrounding area include the Center for Wooden Boats. Then, they got married in the speakeasy room in the apartment complex. Very fun!
I met Lauren and Jonathan at the Seattle Municipal Court before walking around the downtown Seattle area. We found a new, cool rooftop parking garage for a few images as well as some of my favortie places like the main branch of the Seattle Public Library and the Freeway Park area. Then we went over to City Hall for the wedding!
Marta and Steve met on a climbing trip. They then went on many more adventures featuring Steve’s van. So, naturally, we featured the van during their wedding day as well. After taking some portraits around Seattle and the waterfront, we ended up back at Occidental Square for a pop-up wedding with friends!
Yay for weddings! It has been a long time since I last had the opportunity to photograph a wedding. Michele and Mark were married at Willows Lodge with their immediate family in attendance. It was a gray and slightly sprinkly late winter day. They laughed a lot and the love amongst their family was obvious. Willows Lodge arranged for them to get married in the small library upstairs. After the ceremony, I did some portrait sessions for family members that wanted some couple portraits. Thanks for having me there!
2020 was a strange year to be a wedding photographer. It started out with all of these plans for a couple of dozen big weddings. Some of those plans changed, others got postponed, and some people went for an elopement. The term for elopement also kind of morphed into "micro wedding" for some people that wanted an awesome event with fewer people.
Kathy and Nick planned to have a beautiful big wedding this summer. That didn’t work out with the pandemic and the restrictions on receptions. So they postponed their big party until next year and decided to do a micro wedding on the Washington coast. They chose the adorable little planned village of Seabrook in the Pacific, Washington area. We had planned on some images of the two of them taking off their shoes and playing in the water at sunset for some spectacular images. Then the smoke rolled in from Oregon and California for the weekend of their wedding. They had a fantastic attitude about it. They still got married, and they still had a great time with their friends. Your wedding either goes perfectly, or you have a great story to tell for the rest of your life!
Margaret and Mark are a wonderful couple that had to postpone their big event until 2021. However, they wanted to get married before that, so they had a small, backyard micro wedding with a few friends this year.
Mona & Jonathan came from California to get have a micro wedding at the courthouse in Seattle. They live in the bay area and have full-time jobs as well as both working on their Master’s degrees. Seattle courthouse weddings look pretty different at the moment with weddings happening outdoors within walking distance at various courtyards in the area. Mona & Jonathan are very cool people. Congratulations!.
Meeran and Jaewoo are super cool, super nice people. They had big plans for their wedding. What we did was a beautiful micro wedding at Kerry Park with some portraits in Fremont and Ballard before the ceremony. Kerry Park is a fantastic place to get a great view of Seattle. It is totally cool to get married there without a reservation as long as you don’t make people move or set up chairs and equipment. Anyway, congratulations to Meeran and Jaewoo!
Julia & Blair had big wedding plans. Instead, they ended up with a socially distant micro wedding for them and their family in a backyard on Bainbridge Island. They and their families were great people to spend the afternoon.
